She has her fish, her room, her toys and her parents but no real control over the larger events that shape her childhood. Underneath the surface of a tranquil family life, lie currents of discontent. The girl has stopped talking, refusing to engage with her parents until they sort out their problems. She lives in an inner life of questioning and observation, of attempting to influence through her silence. She is determined in her muteness but the relationship betweeen her parents continues to fragment. As the marriage moves toward total disintegration the girl finds within herself the means to survive by understanding her parents and their world.
