This is a love story – a love story that began forty years ago, and has yet to end. And it is also the story of a journey across Italy aboard an old off-road vehicle with neither doors nor windshield, embarked upon by Emiliano De Vito, a 23-year-old who has just graduated from the university with top grades in Ancient Literatures, and Vittorio Vezzosi, who authored a single book published years earlier; the book’s worldwide success convinced Vezzosi to hole up in a farmhouse above Florence and stay hidden from view except by Mamadou, his Ghanaian friend/jack of all trades, who takes care of him. So our two main characters go quarrelling their way towards Milan – their generations are too distant from one another – and to the 1980s-1990s market/fair, where Vittorio has agreed to give a speech, thus breaking a quarter-century of silence as the attention of all of Italy and of all the social media is focused on them. Awaiting them in Milan are Milena, the author’s great love and the only reason why the two have undertaken the journey, and an enormous crowd eager to hear the “prophesy” of Vezzosi, “the only resource and the last hope” of this country of ours gripped by and lost in the memory of itself.
