Ukrainian Whispers

This film is the fruit of months spent in Ukraine, where the director Francesca Mannocchi, one of Europe’s top war correspondents, arrived before the beginning of the invasion.

Mannocchi, with her ability to live among and gain the trust of the local population, wants to collect and narrate the small stories of the survivors. Among the freed streets of Bucha, Borodjanka, Irpin, she realized that to narrate a war means listening to its many survivors and their suffering.

This is the starting point of the film’s reflection: in a world saturated with images, what remains of the suffering a war produces? Ukrainian Whispers wants to be a call to attention, to use a keener gaze on wars. A call to listen to the many voices that become one.
